Doctors with Africa CUAMM Padova began its activities 55 years ago in Italy. Since its establishment, it has operated in 32 countries around the world, out of which 22 are in Africa. The NGO began working in Ethiopia in 1985 when it sent its first medical doctor to Gambo Hospital in Arsi Negelle Woreda, East Showa Zone, Oromia Region.
CUAMM works in the Ethiopian health Sector and is registered under the Ethiopian Law as an International non-governmental organization since 1996. It is also a member of Christian Relief and Development Association (CRDA), which is an umbrella organization with over 200 NGOs as members, and a signatory to the Code of Conduct for NGOs in Ethiopia. Activities and Areas of Intervention in Ethiopia Doctors with Africa CUAMM-Ethiopia operates in three regional states: Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities & Peoples, and Tigray. Its work mostly focuses on curative and preventive healthcare with particular attention to mothers and children along with capacity building of the respective regions by providing highly qualified health personnel, not available locally, to guarantee the quality of health services.
Areas of focus include health facility construction, training of health personnel and provision of technical and professional support in the medical field. St. Luke Hospital and College of Nursing in Wolisso, Oromia Region, Mekele Physiotherapy Center in Tigray and Dubbo, and St. Mary Hospital in Southern Region are the examples some of the work the NGO has done. The NGO works in cooperation with respective Health Bureaus and collaborates with the Ethiopian Catholic Church as a Local NGO Copartner.
