In the last 20 years, the IDC has been active in Djibouti helping to improve living conditions of the population, with a special focus on the health sector. Since 1980, Italy has been involved in the management, professional training and technical assistance of Balbalà Hospital.
Around 30 million have been invested so far, enabling the Hospital to strengthen the provision of basic and specific health services and making it a centre of excellence in the whole Horn of Africa.
We are currently working for the rehabilitation and the enlargement of the existing premises and equipment supply, allocating about 9 million Euros to this purpose. The IDC is also responding to the increasing flows of refugees from the neighbouring countries stricken by the drought with an emergency intervention which provides urgent medical supplies.
Italy strongly supports the abandonment of FGM and in this regard is launching in Djibouti a new 2.2 million euro initiative in order to contribute to the eradication of FGM in the country through the training of 300 health workers.
