Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli (CISP)
Description of the NGO

While CISP (Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei Popoli/International Committee for the Development of Peoples) is headquartered in Rome, Italy, it currently carries out relief, rehabilitation, and development programs in 24 countries around the world.

CISP has been working in Ethiopia since 1986, where it engages in emergency, as well as longer-term development Programs. The organization’s motto “Rural Development for Self Reliance” underscores its strong belief in the ability of communities to decide, direct and implement their own development goals. CISP works hard to ensure that its programs address real needs and are designed in partnership with the communities with which it works.

Activities and Areas of Intervention in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, CISP so far has been operating in the Regional States of Oromia, Benishangul Gumuz, Tigray, and Afar. CISP is officially registered under Ethiopian law and works in close collaboration with the Federal Government, as well as with the decentralized Regional Administrations. All CISP Programs involve strong partnerships with relevant government line departments, such as those responsible for natural resources, water, health, education, disaster prevention, and agriculture. CISP also maintains a collaborative relationship with a number of Ethiopian NGOs and Community Based Organizations, such as village cooperatives and women’s groups.

Currently CISP has a number of projects mainly in the areas of rural development & food security, vocational training and labor creation, micro finance, water & sanitation, and promotion of children’s rights.

The three main conceptual features of CISP interventions in Ethiopia are:

  • Supporting decentralization by strengthening the link between the local government institutions, communities and grass roots associations;

  • Supporting the strengthening of local social capital.
