In the framework of the Ethiopian-Italian Development Cooperation Country Program, signed in Addis Ababa on June 21, 1999, the Government of the Republic of Italy and the government of Ethiopia agreed, among others, to support the Education sector as a priority area of intervention in order to improve the literacy levels of the society in specific beneficiary regions.
Agreement
After agreeing on the fact that the education sector is a priority intervention area, the two governments entered into a bilateral agreement to finance the Ethiopian Education Sector Development Program (ESDP).
On the basis of this agreement, the Government of Italy is supporting the ESDP through the provision of 28.5 million Euros in the form of grant. Type of Financing
The Italian contribution to ESDP is directly given to the Ministry of Education for earmarked areas of support. This approach is an innovative one for the Italian Development Cooperation and is thought to be more sustainable because the support is disbursed within the national framework of the Education Sector Development Program.
Goal of Italian Contribution
The primary goal of Italian contribution to the Ethiopian ESDP is to aid the expansion and quality improvement of the Ethiopian education system in identified Regions (Afar, Tigray, Oromia, and Somali).
