The Axum Obelisk
The homecoming of the Axum obelisk, completed on April 25, 2005, marks the opening of a new chapter in bilateral cooperation between Italy and Ethiopia.
The Italian government has agreed to finance a program that will improve the Axum obelisk site, including the re-erection, restoration, and the training of archaeological assets conservation staff through a partnership initiative with Government of Ethiopia and the implementation agency, UNESCO. The first instalment, in the amount of 1.2 million Euros, has already been transferred to UNESCO.
This project is aims to: Undertake an environmental impact and geo-radar assessment of Axum site before the re-erection of the obelisk takes place. Directly assess the state of preservation of archaeological structures at the site. Enhance the conservation of the Axum site. Explore ways to create sustainable benefits from the Axum site for the Tigray Region and Ethiopia as a whole. Create an Information and Communication Campaign on the Project. Train tourist guides and operators and for the conservation and restoration staff of the site.
