Dermatological Care for All: a Basic Human Right |
November 1, 2006 |
The first International Congress on Dermatology and Public Health “Dermatological care for all: a basic human right” was held on November 1-4, 2006 in Addis Ababa and Makalle, Ethiopia. This event was organized by the Migration, Tourism and Tropical Dermatology Preventive Medicine Department of the San Gallicano Hospital in Rome (Dipartimento Medicina Preventiva delle Migrazioni, Turismo e Dermatologia Tropicale dell’Ospedale San Gallicano di Roma), in collaboration with the NGO IISMAS and by the Health Office of the Tigray Region. The Italian Technical Cooperation Office and the medical health experts of the HSDP (Health Sector Development Program) as well as the International Society of Dermatology, also contributed to the Congress. Among around fifty participants that took part in the meeting, there were many dermatology specialists from different countries, the Ethiopian Minister of Health, Dr. Tedros Adhanom, the Italian Under-secretary for Health, Sen. Antonio Gaglione and other notable Italian participation. The output of this conference, in addition to providing the possibility to share information and contacts between the different participants, was the creation of the Community Dermatology International (CDI). This association intends to meet once a year and will target three main objectives: provide dermatological care to developing countries, with particular attention to poor people in rural areas and focusing on local communities involvement; Develop both theoretical and on the job training material on dermatological questions for local medical and para-medical personnel; Raise funds through various promotional and informative activities with a view to support the first two objectives. The steering committee of the CDI was also established during the event. The role of this committee will be to coordinate the CDI activities with other dermatological international associations and to produce a progress report on a regular basis. The next meeting of the CDI is scheduled to take place in Ethiopia in 2007.
