Addis Ababa - Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Lapo Pistelli, will attend the 24th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union. On the margins of the Summit, Deputy Minister Pistelli will have several bilateral meetings with African counterparts in order to discuss issues of mutual concern, with special attention to the situation in Somalia and other areas of crisis in Africa. Mr Pistelli will also encourage African Governments to maintain constant dialogue with Italy in view of their participation to EXPO 2015, the next Universal Exposition which will be hosted in Milan from May to October 2015 and will be dedicated to sustainable development (“Feeding the planet, energy for life”).
Deputy Minister Pistelli, who is responsible for the activities of the Italian Development Cooperation within the Italian Government, will also take part in two important events that will reinforce the bilateral cooperation between Italy and Ethiopia. On Monday 27th January, at 3.30 pm at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development of the FDRE, the Italian Deputy Minister Pistelli and the Ethiopian State Minister of Finance and Economic Development, H.E. Ahmed Shide, will sign an agreement for the implementation of the initiative entitled "Italian Contribution to the MDG Fund 2013-2015". The initiative, which was recently approved by the Italian Development Cooperation, is aimed at renewing Italian support to the Ethiopian MDG Fund for the period 2013-2015 with a contribution of 7 million Euros.
On Tuesday 28th January, at 9.30 am at the UNECA Conference Hall in Addis Ababa, Deputy Minister Pistelli will participate to the launching ceremony of the second phase of the "General Education Quality Improvement Project (GEQIP)", a programme owned by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and which Italy supports with 7,5 million Euros trough a multi-donor Trust Fund managed by the World Bank. It is expected that the ceremony will see the participation of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, along with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister and State Minister for Education and other Government representatives. Both initiatives, MDG Fund and GEQIP II, will be carried out under the new bilateral cooperation framework 2013-2015 that was signed by Italy and Ethiopia on the 30th of May 2013 in Addis Ababa and is worth 98,9 million Euros.
The mission of Deputy Minister Pistelli in Addis Ababa will also provide an opportunity to present the new “Italy-Africa Initiative”, officially launched by the Italian Government last 30 December in Rome. The aim of the initiative is to put Africa at the centre-stage, upgrading the Italian-African partnership in the political, economic, social and cultural fields. Through this initiative Italy will promote economic forums focused on the areas of mutual interest (from energy to the environment, from agriculture to infrastructure); collaborations in the fields of institution-building, good governance and rule of law; cooperation in the cultural field (between Universities, research centers) and promotion of cultural and sport events. Not only the Governments, but also the private sector and the civil society will be involved.
